Justin Bieber Joins Taylor Swift Onstage In L.A.

Teen heartthrob surprised concertgoers when he joined Swift for a duet on 'Baby' Tuesday night.

Justin Bieber is all about surprises this summer. Back in July, the 17-year-old pop superstar took fans by surprise when he joined Selena Gomez onstage in Costa Mesa, California, and on Tuesday night, he made another unexpected appearance when he joined Taylor Swift onstage for a duet of his hit "Baby" at her Speak Now tour stop in Los Angeles.

Video footage of the duo's performance at the Staples Center hit the Internet shortly after the concert. It shows the music superstars sharing song verses and Bieber spitting a brief rap midway throughout the number.

Swift took to Twitter hours later to applaud her roaring concert audience and their overwhelming reaction to the Bieb's surprise appearance. "Dear amazing LA crowd tonight, God only knows what I'd be without you," she wrote. "You think you've heard LOUD screaming in your life. Then @justinbieber comes out and does a surprise song during your show. Woah. Unreal."

Bieber responded to the country-pop darling, tweeting, "@taylorswift13 we should do that more often. :) great show! #muchlove."

It was nothing but love as Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun, also chimed in on the surprise concert cameo. "Had to keep it a secret all day. But @justinbieber just came out and sang BABY with @taylorswift13 at STAPLES. EPIC ROAR! #greatmoment," he wrote on Twitter.

Bieber also recently collaborated with Chris Brown. Earlier this month, the Video Music Award nominee showed off his rap skills on "Ladies Love Me," a track that appears on Breezy's Boy in Detention mixtape.

Florence And The Machine Return With 'What The Water Gave Me'

Florence Welch gives fans first taste of what they can expect on her new disc, due in November.
By James Montgomery

Florence and the Machine conquered audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with their dynamic, dramatic debut, 2009's Lungs. Ever since, fans have been clamoring for the follow-up. Now, it's finally on the horizon.

On Tuesday (August 23), Florence Welch announced on her official site that her sophomore album would hit stores on November 7 in the U.K., and according to her rep, it'll be out sometime the same month here in the U.S. She also gave us all a sneak peek of what we can expect on the disc with a soaring, chiming, epically massive new track called "What the Water Gave Me," which is imbued with a gospel choir and Welch's epic pipes, and seems destined to rule the festival circuit for the foreseeable future.

The still-untitled album is produced by Paul Epworth and was recorded at London's iconic Abbey Road studios. Welch had been premiering a handful of tracks from the record during live shows — the standout "Strangeness and Charm" will reportedly also make the cut — and earlier this summer, before her performance at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tennessee, she sat down with MTV News to discuss the process behind making the new album, calling it a more cohesive effort than her debut.

"I wrote so much of my first album at different times and places — some songs when I was 18, some when I was 21 — so there are so many pieces and styles on it," she said. "And that's one of the things I love about it, but for my new record, I wanted to do things differently. It's why I worked with one producer in one studio. I want to tie all those things together ... in one piece, if possible."

Welch also said that the album draws inspiration from ethereal sources too, including one song on the album she wrote after a ghostly visitation.

"There's a song on it that's inspired by a visit [from] my dead grandmother — like, I had a really, really vivid dream about her and, um, she was giving me advice in this dream," she said. "And it was really emotional, and I woke up crying. And there's one song that's inspired by that experience."

Justin Bieber's VMA-Nominated 'U Smile': Frame By Frame

'We took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist,' director Colin Tilley says of clip, which is up for Best Male Video.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Bieber
Photo: Kevin Mazur/ WireImage

In the Colin Tilley-directed "U Smile" video, Justin Bieber meets some girls on the street and becomes smitten with one of them. He then takes her to hang out with him at a big concert hall, where he makes her swoon by playing the piano for her.

The sugary-sweet clip is up for Best Male Video at the 2011 Video Music Awards, and Tilley, who also worked with Bieber on "Never Let You Go," spoke to MTV News about the behind-the-scenes of making the video just days before the VMAs go live Sunday.

The video opens with Bieber meeting some fans outside a theater, and the Flip cam footage they used for audio ended up making the final cut. "During this scene, we were only outside for 15 minutes, but literally paparazzi were everywhere," Tilley recalled. "It was pretty difficult, but I'm happy with the finished product. This whole intro scene was actually done very fast, because we didn't have much time before the sun set, so we really just had to go full-throttle."

While paparazzi and nature proved to be obstacles, a third was making sure that Tilley cast the perfect leading lady. "The girl's gotta be really great ... she was really nice and she did a great job," he said. "Justin and her clicked really well."

The video is actually pretty simple, with the focus of it being on "our classic piano in this beautiful theater, lots of great lighting. This is pretty much focused on Justin's performance.

"This song, in general, when I first heard it, I kind of got the feel that it was a more mature feel for Justin," Tilley continued. "So we took a more mature approach in the video, focusing on him as an artist and as a kid growing up. ... For me, this was kind of the place he goes every night to practice, so he was willing to take this girl he saw on the street and take her into his world."

For Tilley, the standout shots are of Bieber hanging out in an alleyway, calling to mind the images in Michael Jackson videos. "This is probably my favorite setup in the video," he said. "In this alleyway, it had a whole Michael Jackson feel. It was pretty iconic for Justin at the time."

As it turns out, the video was shot right after the 2010 VMAs, when Bieber took home his first-ever Moonman. "The night before, he had won an award and he just came to set with a great attitude; he was super positive," Tilley said. "I hadn't worked with Justin for probably a year. He's so much fun to work with. He's got a really cool attitude on set."

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for Best New Artist by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Cee Lo's 'Cry Baby' Video: Jaleel White Takes It Frame By Frame

Former 'Family Matters' star talks playing Cee Lo, supposed Drake cameo and Bobby Brown dance moves.
By Gil Kaufman, with reporting by Kara Warner

Cee Lo Green (file)

Cee Lo Green has definitely mined a very specific retro 1950s vibe in the videos he's released so far from his Lady Killer album. But when it came time to work up a clip for "Cry Baby," he picked a guest star who is best known for his work in the 1990s as the ultimate über-nerd.

Yes, Jaleel "Urkel" White is all grown up now and looks nothing like his four-eyed goofball character from "Family Matters." He's also a much better dancer then you might have remembered. Like the other Killer videos, this one opens with the title in squiggly "Fame" script and zeroes in on an idyllic, color-splashed urban scene, in which White is sitting on a stoop breaking up with his girl.

White said he flexed his improv muscles during the emotional scene, coming up with all kinds of funny takes in addition to the "two trains passing" one eventually chosen by the director. "You're breaking up with a girl ... and my best line didn't even make it," recalled White, who said his manager insisted he take the gig when the call came in to cast him as Cee Lo's doppelgänger in the clip. "I was like, 'Baby, we squirrels in opposite trees. You gotta find another nut!' "

The sad split soon turns more joyful, as White spins to the camera and stars lip-synching the bouncy tune's lyrics with a big smile on his face as his girlfriend ("Big Time Rush" star Tanya Chisholm) looks on dumbfounded. The entire video was shot over one very long day, and White said he did a lot of improvising over the course of the 13-hour grind.

"I learned the entire choreography in about four hours Sunday night, the night before we shot," he said of the intricate bobby-sox dancing he does in the second section while backed by a group of four male dancers. And yes, he noticed that one of the dancers, Joe, looked a lot like rapper Drake. "We kind of said it on the set a little bit too," he said of the resemblance, which turned into an Internet meme when fans began speculating about whether Drizzy had made a surprise cameo.

By the third section of the video, White — dressed in plaid pants, a cardigan, black tie and white shirt — is shimmying alongside four female dancers. He admits he probably messed up the choreography in this section "a million times," but he's confident director Mickey Finnegan bailed him out and chose the best take. "That's where editing helps you ... I mean, these are all professional dancers. They just pick up steps really quickly. They kept telling me I did a great job. That just fueled my fire and made me want to keep up with them."

And, professional that he is, White used an old musical-theater trick and snuck some glances at his fellow dancers in the big street-hoofing number near the video's end to make sure he was getting his steps right. "I'm watching them too, just to make sure my steps are on," he said.

As the song builds to a dramatic climax, White falls in and out of step with his crew as they spin, jump and boogaloo all around him. "The whole thing was just an ode to the '50s," he said of the sock hop, "Grease" street-dancing vibe.

"I guess it's my take on Cee Lo," said White, who, coincidentally, has a gravelly talking voice that is eerily similar to the Gnarls Barkley and solo star. "You'll have to ask Cee Lo what it's like seeing me be him."

The whole thing comes home with some freestyle dancing, which White said he was fully prepared for given his experience as a " '90s kid" dancing in his church basement. "I just kind of went full Bobby Brown on them right there," he said of his smooth, shoulder-rocking New Jack moves.

"We shot it all in one day and it was just ... magic," he said.

Celebrity Poker Scandal -- Texas Hold 'Em is Legal!

Filed under: Nick Cassavetes, Celebrity Justice, Exclusive, Deadline

0822_nick_cassavete_poker_ex_tmz
The now-infamous Texas Hold 'Em celebrity poker games that have triggered a flurry of lawsuits has a new twist -- according to a famous player/director, the lawsuits are bogus because the game is legal.

Nick Cassavetes, who directed "The Notebook" and "Alpha Dog," has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit filed against him to take back his winnings, on grounds California law does not consider Texas Hold 'Em to be illegal gambling.

According to the docs, the game is not played as a banking or percentage game.  For example, blackjack is a banking game because you play against the house.  In Texas Hold 'Em, you play against the other players.

According to California law, the penal code only prohibits banking or percentage games.  The law singles out illegal games, including roulette, blackjack, 21, hokey-pokey, rondo, tan, fan-tan, 7 1/2, lansquenet and rouge et noir ... but Texas Hold 'Em is not mentioned.

Cassavetes is being sued by the bankruptcy trustees of Brad Ruderman -- a convicted ponzi scheme criminal who lost a lot of money in the games, to people like Cassavetes and Tobey MaguireLeo DiCaprio, Ben Affleck and others also played.

Would Lady Gaga Ever Want To Be President?

Mother Monster talks about which of the country's big problems she'd like to solve.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Lady Gaga
Photo: Scott Gries/ Picture Group

Lady Gaga has never been shy about stumping for political causes. She's stumped for marriage equality and spoken out for marriage equality and against "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." Her Born This Way track "Americano" even touches on immigration issues, but just because she's currently pop music's most vocal advocate doesn't mean she'd want anything to do with actually holding public office.

During the live "MTV First: Lady Gaga" on Thursday night, the singer said that she has no aspirations to ever do something like become president, even if she was given a free pass for the day to be the leader of the free world.

Watch as Gaga lets her fans announce that she's opening the VMAs this year.

"Well, first of all, I wouldn't want to be president for the day," she told MTV News. "And I say that because I really, for myself, it's important that my message, although it has political implications, I like to keep myself separate.

"Because politics can constrain things," she continued. "So our message can be completely free of any politics and we can just surge forward."

Lady Gaga gave us the real story behind her "Yoü and I" video.

But she has a few big issues she thinks she'd tackle if she were the commander in chief. "I would find alternative uses of energy, I would make marriage equal," she said, before taking a second to figure out her next pet cause. "And world peace. Well, I would do everything I could with the debt crisis, but we all know that's going to take a little while."

During the sit-down, Gaga also opened up about her just-released music video for "Yoü and I" and also shared with fans that not only would she be performing at the 2011 Video Music Awards on August 28, but she'll also be the artist opening the show when it airs live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. See the list of nominees, revisit last year's highlights and vote for your favorites in the general categories by visiting VMA.MTV.com.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Nervous To Play I'm With You Live

Anthony Kiedis says he's concerned about 'not having enough days to practice.'
By Gil Kaufman

Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis
Photo: MTV News

When MTV News sat down with legendary Los Angeles punk-funk icons the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Wednesday, they talked about a lot of things very confidently — their new video, fond memories of L.A.'s Forum, pygmy scientists and the state of music videos today. But the one thing they were clearly nervous about was the upcoming tour in support of their new album, I'm With You.

It's not performance anxiety: that much you can tell from the loose vibe of the just-unveiled "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" video. The Chili Peppers have seen millions of faces over the past 28 years, and rocked them all (or at least 99.9 percent of them). No, it's the challenge of playing the new songs from the album in front of their adoring fans without enough time to get them into fighting shape. Also, they're planning to play the new album in its entirety, top to bottom, on tour.

Regarding his concerns about performing the songs, singer Anthony Kiedis said, "Not having enough days to practice. It's very dynamic, so we really have to focus on letting each song exist unto itself with all of its beauty. There's a lot going on."

How did Flea's hour-long bass groove turn into "Rain Dance Maggie"?

The band wrote a lot of new material for their 10th studio album, and while Flea said the tunes that made the final cut are not necessarily better than those left on the floor, "it was important to us that each song stood on its own emotionally and aesthetically, that held its own spot," he said. "So we really have a lot of territory to cover in terms of emotional [ground]."

Besides, the simple fact is they're new songs and the group — including new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer — just don't know them as well as classics like "Give It Away" and "Under the Bridge."

They've done some of the requisite prep work, according to Kiedis, who said a string of three club shows before their recent Summer Sonic fest headlining set in Japan helped loosen up the muscles.

"Maggie" director Marc Klasfeld explains how the "simple and iconic" video was made.

"It was so fun ... it was wildly fun," Kiedis said of the gigs. "We really didn't know exactly what this would be like, a) because it's been a long time and b) because we now play with Josh. We felt pretty good about everything that we had done in terms of writing and recording, but no one really knew and it was just as good as one could have ever dreamt of ... It was like being 21 years old and not being able to sleep the night before a show."

Check back on MTV.com for highlights from the Q&A, including the band discussing the early inspiration for their iconic videos, where they feel they belong in music history, whether Anthony Kiedis will ever join Twitter and more!
